Accident and Emergency Services

Pacific International Hospital pioneered modern day emergency care in Port Moresby and operates one of the best equipped and competently staffed Accident and Emergency Centres in South Pacific, providing round-the-clock coverage for medical and surgical emergencies. A well-run emergency room is of vital importance in any hospital, and the quality of medical intervention provided here may help prevent a more critical condition later on.

Accident and Emergency Services at PIH include seven fully equipped emergency beds easily accessible through a separate, prominently sign-posted hospital entrance. PIH is staffed with full-time, experienced Emergency Care physicians, as well as paramedics and specialised nurses and is provided with a range of state-of-the-art equipment and technology for emergency management and support.

The Hospital’s commitment to holistic care is aimed at caring for the whole patient – rather than just the ailment - and incorporates minimal procedural protocols as well as comfort and assurance of the patient’s family.

The equipment, systems and protocols for the emergency beds have been standardised for application across the system. PIH has designed an ambulance that suits the PNG conditions and is cost-effective. These fully equipped vehicles with trained paramedics can provide needed emergency care at the site of incident and en route to the Hospital.

Anaesthesia and Critical Care Services

Pacific International Hospital provides highest standards of Intensive Care Unit (ICU) services for medical emergencies, with greater recovery chances for the critically ill. The ICU is equipped with the most up-to-date ventilator support, cardiac monitoring, pulse oximeter as well as pulmonary artery catheter and arterial lines. The ICU is designed for life-threatening situations such as acute renal or liver failure, acute respiratory distress, cardiac or multiple organ failure, septic shock and coma. At times a patient may be admitted for closer monitoring after a major surgery. This may help in stabilising the health condition and reduce the chances of infection and any post-operative complications. The ICU is linked to specialities such as general surgery, gynaecology and obstetrics, dialysis, and accident and emergency care. The Intensive Care Unit capabilities include mechanical ventilation, therapeutic hypothermia, chest-tube and induced coma.

The ICU nurse-patient ratio is 1:1 for patients on ventilators and 1:2 for other patients. The units are supervised by a broadly skilled team of full-time senior ICU specialists with extensive training and experience in critical care medicine. In addition to providing high quality critical care, the highly trained ICU team also conducts regular quality audits and training sessions to maintain care that is comparable to the best in the region.
