Dental Hygiene – school oriented

Having a great smile can instantly brighten up your personality. It is usually one of the first things people notice about you. So, how can you have that million-dollar smile? The answer is simple. A good set of sparkly white teeth is possible with a proper dental care.
Apart from brushing our teeth, most of us don’t follow a good dental care routine. Just like we take care of our skin or hair, taking care of our teeth is also extremely necessary.

Dental Hygiene tips

• Brushing

Brushing is one of the easiest and the most important steps of a proper dental hygiene. However, most of us don’t do it the right way. So, while brushing your teeth, you must position the brush at an angle of 45 degrees, near the gum line. Thus, the bristles of the brush will be in contact with both the surface of the teeth and the gums. Now, once you master the position, brush with an up-down motion and don’t go horizontally. However, make sure you do it gently and not rigorously, to avoid gum bleeding.

Once you finish brushing your teeth, don’t forget to clean the surface of your tongue. This is because the bacteria take residence there and cause bad breath. You can use your toothbrush to clean your tongue or use a tongue cleaner. Make sure you brush your teeth at least twice a day to avoid acid build-up.

• Flossing

Yes, flossing can be a chore, but it is necessary. Flossing can remove all food particles and detrimental substances from your teeth. This is because it reaches deep between your teeth, where even the bristles of your toothbrush cannot reach. With flossing, you can be sure that your teeth are perfectly clean. This step must be done after you brush your teeth. Make sure you floss at least once a day.

• Avoid Tobacco and Betel Nut

Smoking cigarettes or chewing tobacco, pan, buai, etc. is completely harmful to your teeth. By avoiding these, you will be doing a great favour to them. Apart from that, you will be safe from oral cancer and any other periodontal complications. Also, when you quit consuming these products, you will no longer have to use other agents to mask the smell of tobacco. For example, eating candies or having a cup of coffee after cigarettes (to hide the tobacco smell) can be harmful for you. So, say no to these damaging products and keep yourself safe.

Limit the consumption of Soda, Alcohol, and Coffee

Alcohol, soda, and coffee contain high levels of phosphorous, which can be beneficial for your oral health when consumed in small quantities. Too much phosphorous can diminish the levels of calcium from your body. This leads to tooth decay and gum diseases. Also, did you know? When you consume beverages containing corn syrup and food dye, it can make your teeth appear dull and discoloured. So, for sparkly white teeth, it is best you avoid these beverages and opt for something that helps strengthen your teeth and enamel, such as a glass of milk.

• Consume Calcium and Vitamins

For the good health of your teeth, you must consume plenty of calcium (which is highly beneficial for your bones too!). So, start consuming a tall glass of milk, orange juice, broccoli, yogurt, cheese, eggs, and other dairy products. If you are not getting enough calcium from natural resources, you can also start taking supplements, according to your age and necessity. However, before you start, it is always better to consult with a doctor.

Vitamin D is important for you to maintain the health of your gum and teeth, whereas, Vitamin B is important for their protection. It helps avoid cracking and bleeding. For a good dental hygiene, you will also need copper, zinc, iodine, iron and potassium.

• Visit a Dentist

You must visit a dentist at least twice a year for a comprehensive dental check-up. This helps maintain a good oral hygiene and prevents any future dental complications.

• Mouthwash

All mouthwashes are not beneficial. You must always use the ones containing Listerine and chlorine dioxide because it helps kill all the bacteria from your mouth. This will also provide you with a pleasant breath and give you strong teeth. However, mouthwash alone is utterly useless. If you brush, floss, eat well, and visit a dentist regularly, then the mouthwash is definitely the icing on the cake. Make sure you use a mouthwash at least twice a day.

• Having Dental Problems

If you start experiencing tooth ache, sensitivity or any other dental problems, go to your dentist immediately. This will prevent any complications and your dentist will be able to rectify it.
